  1. I was absolutely stunned to read this. I grew up in Whittier, CA, and my father worked at Fred C. Nelles School for Boys which is what we called the Whittier State School back then (1964 and on). This was the beginning of his long career trying to give voice to the underdog. The poems brought back all the heartache and silence that my dad carried throughout his life. Interestingly, he was working on his BA at that time (using the GI Bill). They hired him because they wanted “someone who had a connection with the boys.” Read: ‘someone brown like them.’
